Microsoft is launching a new credit card designed for gamers called the Xbox Mastercard. This card allows accumulating points that can be redeemed for games and their add-ons. Here are the specifics of how it operates.
What is the Xbox Mastercard?
The Xbox Mastercard, issued by Barclays, is a credit card that doesn’t charge an annual fee. The card stands out because every purchase made with it earns points that can be redeemed for Xbox games and their add-ons. The card is exclusively available to Xbox Insiders in the US, according to an official statement by the bank.
The company will launch the cards on 21st September 2023 and will see a broader rollout in the US sometime in 2024. There are five designs for this credit card, with Xbox Insiders in the US (including Alaska and Hawaii) eligible to apply for the Xbox Mastercard.
How does it work?
It is worth noting that the Xbox Mastercard won’t be linked to Microsoft Rewards, so the points given are separate. With every $1 spent, users receive one point. 1,500 card points will let you claim a gift card worth $15 on Microsoft’s online Xbox store. However, Xbox Mastercard owners can earn five points for every $1 spent on eligible products from the online Microsoft Store. In comparison, purchases on platforms like Netflix and Disney Plus will offer three points. Similarly, each dollar spent on delivery services like Grubhub and DoorDash will also give out three points.
On your first purchase with the Xbox Mastercard, users will get a bonus of 5,000 points ($50) along with three months of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate for new Game Pass members. Game Pass Ultimate is the highest tier of its game subscription service. You can even gift your friends or family the three months of Game Pass if you already got the service. Interestingly, this move will have Microsoft rival Sony, who also offers its own PlayStation credit card that has a points=based system as well.
