While video games were made for everyone, gaming has typically been associated as an activity for the male audience. However, this couldn’t be further away from the truth as a new report has found that more women play video games than we might think.
There are more Females Gamers Than You Think
A recent PlayerPulse study found that the gaming population has a growing number of females in the United States. These figures have yet to match the number of men, but more women are playing video games every year. The study was conducted in over 10,000 households back in April 2023 with participants being over the age of 13.

The report found that 47% of all console gamers in the US are females. This includes 45% of Xbox Series X and Series S owners and 41% of all PlayStation 5 users. Interestingly, more women (52%) own Nintendo Switch than men in the US. Females also make up half of the PC gaming population in the region as well as 54% of all mobile gamers. This challenges the notion of gaming being a hobby for men and shows that a large portion of the gaming community consists of women.
All of these statistics show that females who play video games on consoles, mobile devices, or PC have also grown over the previous year. Notably, the latest survey also arrives after multiple reports of female gamers rising across the globe. In India, a report found that 40% of the gaming population were women. The pandemic and remote working options helped boost gaming for both genders. And now, the activity is often seen as a great ‘stress buster’. As video games are becoming more neutral to every demographic, the accessibility for all genders and age groups has also widened in recent years.
