The release of Ubisoft’s free-to-play first-person shooter game XDefiant has been postponed indefinitely due to multiple bugs and glitches. The game is yet to pass certification for Xbox and PlayStation, which requires the developer to ensure that the game is stable and free of bugs. XDefiant features different factions and characters from popular Ubisoft franchises, including Splinter Cell, Ghost Recon, and The Division. Originally set to launch in the summer of 2023, the new release date is yet to be announced.
In a recent blog post from Ubisoft, executive producer and director Mark Rubin explained the reason for the delay in the launch of XDefiant. According to Rubin, the team started the certification process at the end of July and received their first evaluation in mid-August. Unfortunately, the game did not pass due to compliance bugs that needed to be addressed.
“Compliance bugs are ones that relate to the systems and overall experience that the first parties (Xbox, PlayStation) expect from games on their platform”, the blog post read. As the game didn’t pass the test, the team has spent the last 3-4 weeks fixing those issues and getting ready to make another submission, said Rubin.

After the latest submission takes place (likely in less than two weeks), XDefiant could finally ship by mid-to-end of September. “There is however a likely scenario where we get a conditional Pass, meaning we have to do a Day 1 patch with some final fixes to ensure compliance”, Rubin added. If it comes to the Day 1 patch scenario, that would further push the date to early/mid-October. Finally, Rubin was unable to share an exact release date as of yet and says that players will get an update on the situation once the title passes the certification stage.
XDefiant is a fast-paced, class-based arena shooter that pits four-player teams against each other in various modes and maps. The game allows players to customize their load-outs, abilities, and playstyles according to their preferences. XDefiant is expected to be available for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and Series S, and PC. The game will be free-to-play for everyone but will also have optional in-game purchases such as cosmetics, skins, weapons, and more.
