Respawn Entertainment’s Titanfall 2, a highly regarded first-person shooter, has recently undergone an unexpected update that introduces a new and enigmatic game mode to the game’s multiplayer aspect. This update is the first significant one since 2017, leading fans to wonder about the franchise’s future.
The new game mode is unusually titled “???”. For those unaware of what you can do in the game mode, the game allows you to have infinite rockets to explode everything with unlimited ammo capacity. The description of the new mode has a reference to a quote from Frank Miller’s action film called 300, stating, “Your rockets will blot out of the sun”. It refers to the same phrase used in the movie but with the word arrows replaced with rockets. This is the first time in seven years that new content has been added to the game as a part of an update, which otherwise would be limited to bug fixes only.
While there’s no word from the developers on anything related to the new game mode in Titanfall 2, fans have hoped that the update is a hint of a potential Titanfall 3, which has been long-awaited by many fans of the series. Furthermore, a mysterious message appeared in Apex Legends quote recently, which sparked speculation among some fans that Respawn Entertainment might be working on Titanfall 3, as the message contained numbers corresponding to the launch dates of the previous games in the series.

However, earlier this year, former Respawn designer Mohammad Alavi, who worked on games like Titanfall and Call of Duty, confirmed that Respawn cancelled Titanfall 3 10 months after working on it. This is because the competition was gaining traction, and the developers were having a hard time fixing several issues related to multiplayer.
While he claimed that Titanfall 3 would have been an ‘incredibly better’ game than its predecessor, he also believed that the shift in focus towards Apex Legends was necessary and has proven successful. For those who gave up on Titanfall 2, you can now try the new game mode on PC, PS4, and Xbox One and wreak havoc inside the shooter game.
