Ubisoft is preparing for the launch of their new space adventure game, Starfield, which is often compared to Star Citizen due to its name and Sci-Fi theme. However, Star Citizen has yet to announce a fixed launch date, despite having a budget that is $400 million higher. Let’s take a closer look at the most expensive game that may never be released.
Star Citizen: How it became the most expensive game ever
Star Citizen, despite its massive budget, has yet to deliver a finished product. It’s already become the most expensive game, and considering the fact that it’s not even finished yet, its overall cost will likely be even higher in the future. Other major titles like Cyberpunk 2077 cost over $300 million to make, while Red Dead Redemption 2 apparently costs somewhere between $400 million to $500 million.

The game first entered into private crowdfunding in September 2012, raising over $2 million in just a month. Since then, the developer, Cloud Imperium Game, has offered early access to supporters, which is basically an early build of the unfinished game. Before the game’s full release, the company had even monetized a number of different aspects of Star Citizen, like its various ships. The official website of the company states that the title has drawn in $599,978,265, with the supporters sometimes spending hundreds of thousands of dollars every day.

What is the game about?
As per official notes, Star Citizen is a massively multiplayer space trading and combat simulation game. Unlike Starfield, it offers a diverse universe where often interact with one another. So, the concepts of space miners, traders, and even pirates exist in-game. Apart from this, there is even a standalone single-player campaign mode called Squadron 42, which boasts stars like Mark Hamil and Andy Serkis. However, Cloud Imperium Games appears to be in no hurry for the game’s release.
