Samsung announced the launch of “The First Descendant”, the world’s first gaming title featuring the High Dynamic Range (HDR) 10+ GAMING standard HDR10+ standard adds dynamic metadata to HDR10 source files, optimizing each frame for the viewer’s display capabilities, resulting in improved brightness, colour, and worldwide compatibility. Samsung and Amazon Video jointly announced it on 20 April 2017. Created by HDR10+ Technologies LLC. Developed by NEXON, the game will be unveiled at Gamescom 2023. The brand also revealed the date for the Open beta test.
What is HDR 10+?
The HDR10+ standard delivers a wide range of benefits, including enhanced brightness and color, robust standardisation, ease of implementation and worldwide certification, no licensing fees, and seamless compatibility with HDR10 content. In other words, it is a high dynamic range video technology that improves HDR10 source files by adding dynamic metadata that is used to adjust and optimise each frame of the HDR video according to the consumer display’s capabilities so it looks the same as the creator intended it to look. It was announced on 20 April 2017 by Samsung and Amazon Video.
What is HDR10+ Gaming standard?
Introduced in January 2022, the HDR10+ Gaming standard is designed for gaming titles and supports automated HDR calibration. It can also handle variable refresh rates (VRR) at 4K 120fps with low latency reference mode.

Furthermore, it enables enhanced gameplay with near-instant responses through low latency and variable refresh rate support. Furthermore, the standard provides developers with tools that allow consistent and reliable HDR gaming experiences across all HDR10+ GAMING displays.
The First Descendant to be the first title with HDR10+ Gaming
The First Descendant is the first gaming title that will fully leverage the HDR10+ GAMING standard. “It is set to provide gamers with one of the most responsive, accurate and frictionless HDR gaming experiences to date”, said Samsung. This collaboration with NEXON reinforces Samsung’s commitment to providing “superior visual experiences that go beyond entertainment and media consumption”, claimed the brand.
For the unaware, Samsung’s latest gaming monitors and TV lineups also support the HDR10+ GAMING standard. Apart from this, Samsung revealed that the open beta test of “The First Descendant” will begin on September 19.
