The Resident Evil series is easily one of the most recognisable video game franchises. Despite the first game launching in 1996, the original Resident Evil single-handedly defined the survival horror genre in gaming with innovative 3D graphics (great for its time) and sound design. But a new fan-made remake shapes the series into a more simplistic style, taking Resident Evil 4 and basically making it into a 2D side-scroller like Contra.
Fan Recreated Resident Evil 4 in Doom
The Resident Evil 4 remake was made by YouTuber DooMero, who used the GZDoom engine to retell the adventures of Leon S. Kennedy with a classic side-scrolling mix. Apart from its vastly overhauled mechanics, the overall story is still the same with Leon seeking to rescue the President’s daughter. DooMero was working on the mod for some time now and shared a 30-minute video showcasing its mechanics.

The remake appears to be using textures that were seen in the original Resident Evil 4 but turns the camera to the sides, rather than the iconic over-the-shoulder third-person perspective. Since it’s a fan remake, there were some compromises. The dialogue appears to be limited to certain scenes but features voice lines from the original game as well. But DooMero also took this opportunity to bring back some classic mechanics from the franchise, like using the typewriter to save your progress.
He even recreated the Chainsaw Man scene using an image of the character. This reignites the panic players felt when they first saw this enemy. Keep in mind that this is still just a fan project and not a full release. Capcom has been remaking its older titles and breathing new life into them. But while the official remakes update the original, the fan-made reimagining takes us back to a simpler time.
