Sony is releasing a new update for the PS5, which includes various improvements and additions. One of the major upgrades is the support for Dolby Atmos, utilizing Sony’s Tempest 3D AudioTech technology. Additionally, users can now activate System UI haptic feedback and access new accessibility features among other enhancements.
Dolby Atmos is a spatial audio technology that is widely used in movies, streaming services, and some games, but the PS5 did not support it at launch. The new update enables Dolby Atmos for gaming and media apps on the PS5, as long as the user has a compatible soundbar, TV, or home theatre system connected via HDMI eARC.
How to enable Dolby Atmos in PlayStation 5?
- Head over to the Settings section and then go to the Sound menu.
- Now, go to Audio Output and then to Audio Format (Priority).
- Now, select Dolby Atmos by pressing X on your controller after you take the cursor to that option.
Sony further added that this update also allows streaming apps like Netflix, Disney Plus, and HBO Max to use Dolby Atmos audio. However, the developers will first need to update their respective apps to include this feature. As for the games, according to Sony, the new update for the games allows Tempest 3D AudioTech to work with Dolby Atmos devices and automatically convert existing games that use Tempest 3D AudioTech to Dolby Atmos.

PS Remote Play on Android TV
The new PS5 update is one of the biggest software updates for the console since its launch in November 2020. It also adds PS Remote Play support for Android TVs running Android TV 12 OS or above, a major new feature. PS Remote Play allows you to stream games from your PS5 or PS4 console to another device – including smartphones and tablets (iOS and Android), PCs and Mac – over the internet or through your home network. The models that are verified include:
- Chromecast with Google TV (4K model)
- BRAVIA XR A95L model
Other improvements
Further, for US and UK users, voice commands have been improved. One can now say, “Hey PlayStation, help” to activate Help content or “Hey PlayStation, what’s new?” to check for new PS5 features and see the current PlayStation Plus monthly games lineup.
The PS app on Android and iOS will receive an update later this month where, just like the PS5 console updates, you’ll be able to react to messages with emojis and see a preview of someone’s Share Screen before joining the party on the app.
Then, features that were a part of the beta release are now being released globally for everyone. This includes a new accessibility feature where you can now assign a second controller to one account as an assist controller and use two controllers to operate the PS5 as if it is a single controller. “This feature introduces a new way for you to enjoy games collaboratively with others or help a friend or child navigate a particularly challenging section of a game”, says Sony.
In addition, users now have the option to turn on haptic feedback effects while navigating PS5 with the DualSense controller, DualSense Edge controller, or PS VR2 Sense controller. When enabled, system sound effects for certain events will also be reflected physically through haptics, such as moving focus, reaching the end limit of a scrollable section, checking a box or more.
Party UI has received an update, so you can add a player to your party without making a group or adding them to a group. Other notable improvements include Share Screen Preview, a joinable icon next to your friends’ sessions, game hub tournaments tile, emoji reaction to messages, game help improvements, discover tips section, and the ability to search for games within your game library.
Additionally, you can now mute the beep sound the console makes when you turn it on or off. You can now also set the volume of this beep sound. The PS5 can be equipped with an M.2 SSD with a maximum capacity of 8TB (up from the previous 4TB limit) to expand storage space on the console.
