The Half-Life franchise is a legendary video game series known for shifting the way shooter games are perceived and offering a strong narratively driven experience. The Half-Life and its sequel, Half-Life 2, brought cutting-edge technology to the gaming world. However, the series has become dated in recent years, but this might soon change with a next-gen remaster dubbed Half-Life 2 RTX.
Half-Life 2 RTX: A Near 20-year old Game Gets a Major Visual Overhaul
An announcement from NVIDIA unveiled the Half-Life 2 RTX, which is part of its RTX Remix Project. The company revealed that four of the top Half-Life 2 Mod teams are working on this game and looking to invite additional members from the modding community. This remaster relies on rebuilt materials with Physically Based Rendering tech (PBR) and additional geometric detailing through the Valve Hammer Editor.

Half-Life 2 RTX will launch with support for DLSS 3, full ray tracing, Nvidia Reflex, and NVIDIA RTX IO. The game is currently in development and aims to provide a refreshed experience to loyal and new fans of the series. Unfortunately, it is still unclear when this game will be released, but a short trailer has been shared on YouTube. But if you’re looking to play an updated Half-Life title, you can always check out Black Mesa.

Black Mesa: Half-Life 1’s Unofficial Remaster
Similar to how Half-Life 2 RTX is a remaster, Black Mesa is a remaster and a remake of the original Half-Life. The first entry in the franchise was released in 1998, so Black Mesa lets you relive the original game with a breath of fresh air. It is also a faithful recreation of the landmark first-person shooter that revolutionized the industry.
