The crossplay tools are part of Epic Online Services, a free software development kit that provides various online features for games, such as matchmaking, leaderboards, achievements, and cloud saves.
The crossplay tools were introduced in June 2022 but only supported PC platforms, such as the Epic Games Store and Steam. The tools offer a special overlay that has the ability to merge the friend lists of both stores and enable game invites across them so users can join from any store. The tools have been expanded to include PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch platforms, making the overlay consistent across all platforms.
The overlay also allows players to create a new Epic Games account linked to their native platform account, which can be used to access other Epic Online Services features. According to the company, the tools are designed in such a way that they can work with any game engine and any store or platform.
