China’s video game player population has reached a new high. The country is already the world’s largest gaming market and is also preparing to host ChinaJoy 2023, which is Asia’s biggest gaming event.
Chinese Gaming Population hits new record
As per a report from a local government-run gaming organisation, China’s gaming population has grown to 668 million. Despite the Chinese government cracking down on the industry over gaming addiction concerns, the number of gamers has continued to grow in the region. The crackdown initially had a big impact on the market (in terms of revenue and player count) and its major players like Tencent. But the Chinese gaming market is slowly recovering as the rules loosen and regulators approve game licenses.

ChinaJoy 2023: Asia’s Biggest Gaming Event
The National Press and Publication Administration approved 88 games in its seventh batch of video game licenses. Over 637 licenses have been given out so far, which includes 27 imported tiles. XD Network’s Sword of Convallaria: For This World of Peace was also approved and has already received over 800,000 pre-orders on the game platform TapTap. These licenses were given out right ahead of Asia’s biggest gaming event, ChinaJoy.
ChinaJoy 2023 is set to kick off today and will end by July 31. The expo is expected to attract over 300,000 visitors this year and is a great opportunity for gamers to see the latest games and meet developers behind their favorite titles. ChinaJoy will be held in Shanghai at the BtoC Interactive Entertainment Area which will have more than 200 exhibits over 100,000 square meters and a BtoB area with over 300 exhibits covering 20,000 square meters.
